After nearly a week of searching for evidence in an area of Warwick, New York State Police have removed their blockade of the neighborhood.
Troopers told News 12 Tuesday their operations along Little York Road in Pine Island have concluded, though they are still working the area for clues in an unsolved 44-year-old murder case.
State police obtained a warrant, sources said, to search the property of Michael Moraczewski, who - according to news reports over the years - found the body of Dawn Marino in a nearby cement water tank in 1987.
Marino was reported missing in 1981.
Police have not said whether the search had to do with the Marino murder case, nor whether they found any evidence relating to the Marino case or any other investigation.
They are still responding to tips about the Marino case, though.
Teresa Young and her son, Lou Damato, called in a tip early Tuesday about a mysterious car deep in the woods at the edge of their property, about a mile from Moraczewski's property, where police were searching.
"They had the road closed over there," Young said, "and then it dawned on me, that car was there."
Detectives visited the Youngs' home to photograph the 1970s-era Chevy station wagon, which appears to have been sitting there for decades, with vegetation growing around it and through it.
The family saw news coverage and social media posts about the Dawn Marino case, and figured they should report the mysterious car to police.
The car's wheels are nearly half-sunk into the ground, the seats were pulled out, and the VIN number was removed. It also seems the car was shot at several times.
Several apparent bullet holes were in the passenger side doors.
"I was kind of always suspicious about how this car came here, because of the location it's in," Damato, a high school senior, said. "How do you just get a car here? It's obviously been here for a long time because of the trees and stuff that are around it."
Detectives with Warwick police and state police said Tuesday they still have their tip lines for the Dawn Marino case open, reward money is still available to people who provide important information, and the Dawn-Marino investigation remains open.
Reached by phone Tuesday afternoon, Moraczewski's attorney, John Dupee Jr., said Moraczewski still maintains his innocence regarding the Marino case.
Dupee also said police did not tell his client what they were searching for, nor whether they were following a tip on the Marino investigation.
"We're hopeful that there will not be any charges filed," Dupee said, "but if there are, we will be addressing them in court while pleading not guilty."
