People in Yonkers got a cold splash of water for a cause this weekend as the annual ALS Ice Bucket Challenge returned to Westchester County.

The event honors the legacy of Yonkers native Pat Quinn, who helped turn the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge into a global phenomenon after being diagnosed with ALS at age 30.

Quinn co-founded the challenge, which inspired millions of people around the world to dump buckets of ice water over their heads to raise awareness for the disease and support research efforts.

Although Quinn died six years ago, his impact continues to be felt through the annual event and the ongoing fight against ALS.

"It's one of our biggest ALS awareness events that we run during the year," said Pat Quinn Sr. "It's an awareness event, it's not a fundraiser, it's just to keep the momentum going and keep ALS out in the public eye."

Organizers say the goal is to continue educating people about ALS while honoring Quinn's role in bringing worldwide attention to the disease.
