A Connecticut man was arrested in Rye after police say he bought a car using a fraudulent cashier's check.

Rye police stopped a car without license plates Friday night. The driver said she was operating the recently purchased vehicle for her friend, passenger Jose Gonzalez, 24, of Bridgeport.

Police said Gonzalez had been stopped earlier that day. He claimed he paid for the BMW sedan but had no bill of sale or plates.

Investigation revealed Gonzalez purchased the vehicle with a fraudulent $75,000 cashier's check. He also allegedly tried to identify himself as "Robert Hines" using a fake Massachusetts driver's license when dealing with the victim.

The two had arranged to meet in Rye via Facebook Marketplace, where the car was listed for sale. Gonzalez admitted providing the fraudulent check to buy the vehicle, police said.

Gonzalez faces charges including criminal possession of stolen property and grand larceny. The car has been returned to the victim.
