Healthcare providers joined state and local leaders in Yonkers on Thursday to spotlight breastfeeding disparities and raise awareness about resources available to new mothers.
The event was held at the Westchester Community Health Center.
According to experts, breastfeeding provides important nutrients and antibodies that help protect babies from illness, but they acknowledged that the experience can come with challenges for many families.
"It's the best possible thing that you can feed your child," said Westchester County Health Department Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler.
Amler emphasized the importance of supporting new mothers.
One local mother of four, Cedrika Williams, said each of her children had different breastfeeding experiences and that latching issues were among the biggest challenges she faced.
Leaders say it's important for mothers to know that they do not have to navigate those challenges alone. Dr. James McDonald, commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, highlighted support available through the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, including trained peer counselors who can provide guidance and encouragement.
Health care providers also encouraged mothers to seek help when needed, saying support services are available throughout the community. Xiomara Castro, site director of the Westchester Community Health Center Yonkers, said helping families access care and resources is a priority for providers.
