A fire and reported explosion caused significant damage to an industrial building and prompted a major emergency response in Congers on Wednesday.

Fire officials say the building suffered heavy smoke, fire and water damage, along with a partial floor collapse. "The building has sustained a lot of smoke damage… the manufacturing area saw a lot of heat and fire damage," said Rockland County Fire Coordinator Chris Kear.

Officials say the blast was likely a "smoke explosion" that happened as conditions inside the building worsened. "At some point, we had stopped… and the smoke did increase… the fire kind of took off a little bit," Kear said.

The incident began Wednesday morning, when a 911 call reported smoky conditions near 125 Wells Ave.

Authorities say an explosion was reported a short time later inside the building, with most of the damage believed to be contained inside.

Hazmat teams were called in as a precaution because of materials inside the facility.

Officials say evacuation recommendations were issued at the time due to changing wind conditions.

People from dozens of nearby homes and 12 businesses left the area during the response.

Neighbors say they saw thick smoke and noticed a strong odor, even if they did not hear the blast.

"I was concerned… why test the authorities?" said one resident who left the area.

Officials say three firefighters suffered minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Air quality was monitored throughout the incident, and officials say no harmful readings were detected.

The building is home to Vitane Pharmaceuticals Incorporated, a nutraceutical and dietary supplement manufacturer.

In a statement, the company said it is cooperating with investigators and that safety remains its top priority. The cause of the fire and explosion remains under investigation.
