The Town of Carmel Police Department announced the arrest of a Massachusetts man who allegedly gave officers a false identity during a traffic stop and was later found to be wanted on an active out-of-state arrest warrant.

Officials said that shortly after 11 a.m. Sept. 10, Carmel Police Officer DeSantola, a member of the department's K-9 Unit, was on patrol when he spotted a Toyota sedan with an equipment violation. DeSantola stopped the vehicle at the intersection of South Lake Boulevard and Senior Avenue in Mahopac.

Police said the driver did not have a driver's license and gave officers a false name. With assistance from a Spanish-speaking deputy from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and further investigation at the scene, officers identified the driver as 25-year-old Ronald R. Ramirez Rivas, of Roxbury, Massachusetts.

Police said a records check found an active arrest warrant for Ramirez Rivas issued by the Delaware State Police in connection with theft offenses. Delaware State Police confirmed the warrant and said they intended to seek extradition.

Ramirez Rivas was taken into custody without incident and charged with being a fugitive from justice from another state, a Class B misdemeanor; false personation; and two vehicle and traffic violations for an equipment violation and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Ramirez Rivas was arraigned in Town of Carmel Justice Court and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility pending extradition proceedings, police said.

The vehicle was impounded from the scene.
