New Rochelle is reflecting on a historic milestone this Black History Month.
Two years ago, Yadira Ramos-Herbert became the city’s first woman and first person of color to serve as mayor.
“I still sometimes pinch myself that I’m the mayor,” Ramos-Herbert said, calling the moment both an honor and a responsibility.
She said she stands on the shoulders of those who broke barriers before her and hopes young people see that their voices and lived experiences matter.
Ramos-Herbert added that leadership is not just about being the first, but about holding the door open for others.
