Poison ivy is something many people may come across during the summer—and it can quickly become a serious nuisance if you’re not careful.
Health experts say the plant may look harmless, but it can cause an itchy and sometimes severe rash after contact.
Dr. Allen Srulowitz, Director of the Emergency Department at Montefiore New Rochelle, says knowing how to avoid exposure is key—especially for those spending time outdoors. He recommends wearing long sleeves and pants when gardening or walking through brush.
He also says wearing gloves and avoiding touching your face while outdoors can help reduce the risk of spreading the plant’s oils.
If exposed, washing your skin quickly can help limit the reaction.
Dr. Srulowitz says most cases can be treated at home, but more severe reactions may require medical care. He also warns that certain common mistakes—like touching contaminated clothing or scratching the rash—can spread the irritation further.
Experts say not everyone reacts the same way, with some people experiencing more intense symptoms than others.
