Lock your car doors! That’s the reminder from police throughout Westchester County.
Police officials at the Rye City Police Department tell News 12 they’ve seen a recent increase in vehicle thefts involving cars left unlocked with keys or key fobs inside.
They’re not the only area seeing an uptick in thefts — it’s happening across the county.
Rye police say this type of increase comes in waves, and it’s no surprise the area is seeing it now with warmer weather. That’s why police are reminding everyone to never leave keys or valuables in a vehicle, even if it’s parked in your own driveway.
Police say they’ve also seen an increase in commercial burglaries targeting cash registers and businesses where cash has been left accessible after closing. Business owners are reminded to secure or remove cash from registers or other easily accessible areas before closing for the night.
Police say while these incidents happen quickly, they are preventable by taking a few simple precautions.
