Mount Kisco saw an increased police presence at Mount Kisco Elementary School Tuesday and Wednesday after parents said a disturbing incident occurred on campus.

The increased presence followed a Monday afternoon incident in which three men were detained near a school fence, Westchester County police said.

Several open cans of beer were found nearby, police said. “I was actually horrified by that,” said resident Theresa Flora. “I’m outraged, because it should have not gotten to this point,” said resident Mariana Taormina.

School officials said the incident happened during recess after a ball was thrown over a fence bordering a playground.

Officials said students approached the fence and saw three men standing behind it at the back of Roary’s playground.

Officials said the men attempted to talk to the students and allegedly offered them a drink. Recess supervisors were alerted, officials said.

Students were moved away from the area and police were called.

Police said summonses were issued.

Flora said the incident reflects broader safety concerns near the school. “We have been ringing this bell since Feb. 26 about the drug dealing that we see, the aggressive behavior, the aggressive panhandling that’s right down the street from the school,” Flora said.

A school spokesperson said the grounds are safe and secure. The spokesperson said the superintendent has been in contact with the mayor.

Police have increased regular patrols during arrival and dismissal times.

Taormina said she wants change.“I really hope the town works with the district to prioritize the safety of the children,” Taormina said.

The mayor said the incident is serious and unacceptable.
