Welcome back to Power and Politics. We have more on News 12 senior reporter Tara Rosenbloom's one on one interview with Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado and his campaign for the state's top job. Delgado discusses where he sees himself in the party, his experience winning in a purple congressional district, and his relationship with Governor Kathy Hochle. Fundamentally, what the people care about is, do you care about me? Mhm. Do you actually care about my family's or is this just about power for you? But you bought. Who are you beholden to? Who's got the puppet strings that I don't see? That is how people view Democrats and Republicans generally speaking. That is the fundamental issue we have right now. And that is why people check out of politics because they don't think anybody in politics is really about them. They're for the party, the power elites, they're for big donors, but are they for the people? And so your question to me. I want to cut to a deeper level of that because if I'm trying, oh I'm, I'm a kind this one, I'm playing the game. And you gotta be able to get beyond the game because guess what, to most folks it's not a game, they're actually hurting and they don't want to be treated like pawns, they wanna be treated like people. You know, speaking of your fellow Democrats, a number of them right after you made this announcement, called on you to step down from your post as lieutenant governor. Any plans to do that? No, no, the people, and again, the The people independently elected me. So you gotta think about that, right? The people said we will independently elect you we're gonna give you this position and I'm so grateful for this position. So the notion that I would abandon. That position that the people gave me. Because I feel like I can also present some ideas that might better help the people and by the way, still serve as lieutenant Governor my full term and engage the people and bring accountability to state government as a result. Who am I helping? If I resign. So staying put, uh, so let me ask you this. The question becomes how do you plan to work with Hole during the remainder of your term, um, given that I imagine the dynamic between the two of you must be, for lack of a better term, awkward right now. How would you categorize your relationship with the governor as we're sitting here today? I think, well, right now the relationship, um, as you might expect, right, it's, it's not when we were communicating a lot. Um, and that's, that's a reality. I wanna, I wanna acknowledge though, the. The thing that I've had to process since I've been lieutenant governor, um. I Then this notion that What does it mean to be uh a thought partner, right? What does it mean to to work with somebody um and build with somebody who you came into a position and that was the understanding that that that there would be a thought partnership that that there would be a a way in which the decision making um would be more integrated, there would be more involvement in the decision making but when that doesn't materialize, when that doesn't happen, um, that doesn't stop me from having ideas, that doesn't stop me from. Want to contribute in a meaningful way that doesn't stop me from wanting to do the best that I can to serve the people, uh, and my point here isn't to make this personal. My point isn't to make this, um, you know, about. You know, some, some interpersonal dynamic. My point is to say. The people gave me this position. I have a responsibility to serve, and I'm gonna do whatever I can. I'm happy to talk about any number of issues with the governor. I'm happy to talk and I do talk with the legislative body about what they're working on and how I can elevate the issues that best meet the needs of the public and certainly I'm gonna be talking with all the people of New York, you know, to make sure that we can have those conversations. We have to be in a position where we can separate out. The work of governing? Like what does it mean to govern? Versus what does it mean to leverage. You know, a political dynamic and power. Those are two separate things, and I think the public is tired of the fact that we're conflating those things, that we're treating governing. As a modes of politicking. Governing is not politicking. You politic. In order to then govern, but when you govern, you should govern in a way that is push that aside and you say, OK, let's figure out a way to solve these problems across the political aisle. Democrats restoring trust is really, it sounds like a cornerstone of your campaign. Um, what specifically do you believe that Governor Hochle has gotten wrong that's eroded public confidence across New York? I think there's a number of a number of decisions that and I, and I would argue it's more a process oriented. Um, decision making where you, you see, um. Sort of a back and forth on, on any number of things and it, and it speaks to the, to the vision that I'm speaking about, right? When you think about housing when the first plan was rolled out um back in 23. Right, the, the, the lack of sort of thinking ahead about what it was gonna take um to fully implement that right in an effective way and to get buy in from stakeholders across the state, right? You saw challenges there and I think in part that was born of um. A a an absence of how to critically think about the execution of that decision and what it's gonna take when you just react to a situation um without really thinking about how to execute it right how to actually implement it, you're gonna run into into some challenges, uh there you know we disagreed on on on other things too we disagreed on the Biden situation obviously um I thought it was important for him to. Um, to step down, but I just wanna say I think beyond any um particular decision, I think the, the real thing that I want people to understand is it's not what has been done. Per se It's more about where are we going? And what is the way forward? And where's the vision for that? Because we can talk about fixing housing all day long, but how are we gonna do it? We can talk about childcare all day long. But how are we gonna, how are we gonna do it?

Welcome back to Power and Politics. We are wrapping up this weekend's show with News 12 senior reporter Tara Rosenblum's one on one sit down with Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado. You would be New York's first Afro Latino elected governor. What does that milestone mean to you and, and how would it shape your leadership? You know, I'm a big believer in the power of diversity in the power of. Uh, coming or bringing into. But this is a power, a perspective that um. Hasn't Been brought You know we should be running away from diversity. And inclusion we should be embracing it because it's who we are, so. As a black man with Latino roots, uh, of mixed heritage, um, there's so many New Yorkers who I know can relate to that. Uh, my wife, like I said, is black and Jewish, our kids, so you look at just sort of the tapestry of my own family and, and all the different threads that we bring to bear, um. I like to think that we embody, you know, the best of who we are, uh, as New Yorkers. You know, identity isn't everything, and I don't think in politics it needs to be everything. Nor should it be. But It's important because it can shape your sense of where you fit in the world. And having come from um communities where oftentimes you feel marginalized or overlooked. You know, my perspective on this is to always be about the people. All people Particularly those who are economically in distress. And when I served in New York's 19th congressional district, And there were a lot of, and it was 90% white. There were a lot of economically distressed white people, poor white folks who are struggling. And I feel that pain. I feel that pain because I know. I know family, I have family. I understand what it's like to go hungry. Have to rely on assistance. You know, like I know that experience, I can empathize in a real way, so even though I might be put in a box in terms of oh Afro-Latino and it's this, but it's the experiences that I've had. In the communities that I've been around and grown up with that allow me to get beyond that and see the pain that others that are experiencing real distress economically as well and I think that's the most important piece right now for folks to understand we can't let the identity piece we can't let the tribalism if you will help us or distract us from the fact that a lot of people right now are economically hurting.
