The grappler is described as a pursuit intervention device that quickly halts fleeing vehicles.

Officials say the decision to engage in a chase is carefully evaluated based on risk level and avoided in most cases.

However, some situations require officers to act in the interest of neutralizing an immediate threat.

The office says the grappler will help bring those chases to a safe and swift conclusion.

In a post on Facebook, the office announced that deputies recently underwent training to use the device.

They say the equipment was purchased with asset forfeiture funds, at no cost to taxpayers.
