The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new scam targeting power bills.
Deputies say an elderly man received a call from someone pretending to work for Central Hudson. The caller claimed he owed $900 and threatened to shut off his power if he did not pay.
The man knew he did not owe that amount and did not send money, but he gave the caller his account number before realizing it was a scam.
Officials remind residents that utility companies do not threaten immediate shutoffs without warning and advise people never to give out account numbers or personal information over the phone.
