Federal and state officials are investigating whether Taco Bell could be connected to recent outbreaks of a foodborne parasitic illness.

According to a report by The Washington Post, investigators are examining a possible link between Taco Bell restaurants and cases of cyclosporiasis reported in multiple states.

Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection that can cause severe diarrhea, stomach cramps and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

The report says sources familiar with the investigation indicated authorities are trying to determine whether ingredients served at the fast-food chain may be responsible for the illnesses.

Some Taco Bell locations have reportedly stopped serving certain ingredients while the investigation continues.

However, Taco Bell says there is currently no confirmed link between its restaurants and the outbreak.

Most of the reported cases have been identified in Michigan.

Health officials have also reported illnesses in several other states, including New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Colorado and Texas.

Authorities have not confirmed the source of the outbreak, and investigators are continuing to search for what caused the infections.
