A 15-year-old has been arrested in connection with a Yonkers shooting that left one person dead and four others injured.

Police say the incident occurred around 8:43 p.m. Sunday near Elm Street and Palisade Avenue.

A 20-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining a gunshot wound to his back.

The other victims were identified as two 15-year-olds, a 16-year-old and a 14-year-old. Police say they remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

The teen suspect was taken into custody at the scene. Investigators say they have recovered a loaded gun and ballistic evidence.

The shooting was a targeted incident and there is no further threat to the public, according to police.

"We are investigating the possibility that this is going to be a group violence incident, so we do believe that the individual that we have under arrest targeted the individuals that were on the corner. We don't know if the intended target was actually struck, but we are examining this as a group violence incident," said acting Yonkers Police Commissioner Daniel Campanini.

Yonkers police and Mayor Mike Spano held a press conference covering the shooting at 11 a.m.

Spano discussed the issue of gun violence and law enforcement plans to combat it.

“We have to continue to be vigilant and do the things we need to do to keep our communities safe,” he said. “We are taking our streets back… For those who may think about a retaliatory strike, they might want to think again.”

During a question-and-answer session with media, law enforcement officials said the investigation is ongoing.

They also stated that heavy police presence will be in the area throughout the investigative process.
