Drivers on Long Island could soon see some relief at the gas pump as President Donald Trump looks to suspend the federal gas tax.
The Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association says suspending the federal gas tax would lower prices by about 18 to 20 cents per gallon.
Drivers had mixed reactions to the proposal.
“If they can do that, it would help,” said Sal Staccuneddu. “We’ve cut down on groceries, and we’ve cut down on going out.”
“I don’t think 18 cents is going to make up what we are going to lose in that tax revenue really,” said Glenn Gibbons.
The Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association also says if New York state freezes its gas tax, drivers could save an additional 26 to 30 cents per gallon.
LIGRA says counties could then follow suit, which would add an extra 30 cents on top of everything. That would add up to a potential 80 cents in savings.
This coming as Memorial Day weekend is less than two weeks away.
"I think people are second guessing," said Francina Cerrone. "Should I go to Maine or should I go to upstate New York? Travel 2 1/2 hours or eight to 10 hours."
LIGRA's executive director says the real relief will come when the conflict in Iran ends.
"Once the straight opens up and production goes through everything and everything is flowing, I don't see why we aren't in the $2 range again," said Chris Daniello, LIGRA's executive director.
