Fewer drivers are illegally passing school buses after the first full year of Westchester’s school bus camera program.

An annual data released by the county shows a 23.8% reduction in incidents between 2025 and 2026.

Citations requiring enforcement dropped from 17,867 last school year to 13,621 through June of the 2025-2026 school year. Average monthly violations also dropped from 1,786 to 1,513.

The county launched the bus safety program in partnership with BusPatrol in Oct. 2024. Officials say it uses AI cameras to capture violations, which are then evaluated by law enforcement.

Drivers who illegally pass buses face a $250 fine for their first violation.

“This report shows that our School Bus Safety Program is changing driver behavior and making our roads safer for students traveling to and from school. While we are encouraged by this progress, every illegal passing violation is one too many, and we will continue working with our school districts and law enforcement partners to protect our children,” stated Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins in a press release.
