A 21-year-old Stony Point resident with ties to the University of New Haven was killed in a wrong-way crash in Connecticut Friday night.
Ryan O'Shea, a senior at the University of New Haven, is being remembered as a leader both on and off campus.
O'Shea was a captain on the university's club hockey team and was also the chapter president of his fraternity.
According to a Connecticut State Police report, O'Shea died Friday night when his vehicle was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 91 South in North Haven.
The report identifies the other driver as 31-year-old Guillermo Carmona-Lopez.
According to state police, O'Shea's vehicle was hit head-on before being struck by two additional vehicles. He suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Carmona-Lopez was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.
Two people in a second vehicle and the driver of a third vehicle suffered minor injuries.
The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is assisting with the investigation.
The University of New Haven said O'Shea was pursuing a career in law enforcement. O'Shea's academic advisor remembered him for his commitment to helping others.
"Ryan wanted to go into public service in order to help others. He was engaging in the classroom and will be missed greatly," the advisor said.
Stony Point Supervisor Amy Stamm said she did not know O'Shea personally but expressed sympathy for his family and loved ones.
"This is a heartbreaking tragedy for his family and the entire North Rockland community. It reminds us just how fragile life is. We should all hug our children a little tighter today," Stamm said.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash camera footage from the area around the time of the collision to contact Trooper Patrick Miko at Troop I in Bethany.
