1 dead, suspect in custody after shooting in New Windsor
One person is dead and a suspect is in custody following a shooting in New Windsor Wednesday morning, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Police say they were called just before 9 a.m. to Hawthorne Way for reports of shots fired. Officers found a man with multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities say another man at the scene was initially detained as the investigation unfolded. A suspect is now in custody but no arrest details have been released.
Investigators say the shooting happened inside The Grove, a townhouse complex, and involved people living in neighboring units. Authorities say it stemmed from a long-running dispute between neighbors.
Town Supervisor Stephen Bedetti says this is the first homicide in New Windsor in more than six years.
He called it “a shame” and “an unfortunate situation,” and described the incident as “tragic,” saying he believes both families involved have children.
The complex is considered a quiet, upscale community, where neighbors spent the day stopping by in shock. Many declined to speak on camera.
One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said she is concerned about the impact on the community, especially children.
Police say the incident appears to be isolated and there is no threat to the public.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of family members.
