Brooklyn-based wholesale company recalls smoked seafood over possible listeria contamination
A Brooklyn-based wholesale company recalled a smoked seafood product over a possible listeria contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc., which operates out of Sunset Industrial Park, announced the recall of the Starfish Seafood Trio on Friday. The product includes cold smoked salmon, halibut and trout.
The fish originated in Latvia and was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and South Carolina, according to the FDA.
Officials say Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. contacted its customers who sell the Starfish Seafood Trio, asking them to immediately discontinue its sale.
The FDA urges anyone who purchased the product to not consume it and to return it to the location they purchased it for a full refund.
According to officials, ingesting listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and potentially fatal infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
However, anyone can experience symptoms from listeria including high-fever, headache, nausea and diarrhea.
The FDA says no illnesses have been reported in connection with the Starfish Seafood Trio as of Sunday.
