A tropical air mass settles over the Hudson Valley beginning Thursday, bringing the hottest and most humid weather in several weeks. Afternoon temperatures will climb into the upper 80s to around 90 degrees, while dew points rise into the middle 70s, making it feel much hotter. Heat index values will commonly reach the mid to upper 90s, with some spots approaching 100 degrees during the afternoon. Thursday and Friday are expected to be the most oppressive days, and heat advisories may be issued.

The increasingly humid atmosphere will contain abundant moisture capable of producing torrential tropical-style downpours. Any thunderstorm could quickly produce 1 to 2 inches of rain in a short period of time, leading to localized flash flooding, especially in poor drainage areas, low-lying roads, urban locations, and places where storms repeatedly move over the same area. The Weather Prediction Center continues to highlight the region with a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall through Saturday.

Although widespread severe weather is not anticipated, a few stronger thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts, particularly Thursday afternoon and evening across inland locations. Frequent lightning and brief periods of very heavy rainfall will accompany the strongest storms.

The overall weather pattern remains locked into a classic midsummer setup through early next week—hot, humid afternoons followed by scattered showers and thunderstorms each day. Not every location will see rain, but any storm that develops will be capable of producing heavy downpours and localized flooding before moving through. Cooler, drier air is not expected anytime soon.
