Hurricane Isaias, again?
If that name sounds familiar, you aren't alone. This is the 2026 version, the current version of Isaias, heading towards the Gulf states here as we get towards the weekend. But over six years ago, the tri-state area got damaging winds, tornadoes, heavy rainfall from 2020's Isaias. And you're probably wondering, five billion dollars in damage up and down the East coast. Unfortunately, 12 directly related deaths. And we're still using this name?
Well, here's the thing. The World Meteorological Organization's Hurricane Committee sits down every year to decide which names get retired and which names stay in the six-year naming cycle. In this case, we just didn't get enough votes on Isaias being retired because there was also so many other damaging storms across the United States in that season. In fact, we went all the (0:54) into the Greek alphabet, if you remember, back in 2020. So the bottom line is, it just remained in the cycle. And that's that. Debatable? Yes.
