A woman is dead after a house fire in New City Sunday morning.

Clarkstown police say they responded to a report of a structure fire at 71 Carolina Dr. at approximately 9:05 a.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire.

Initial information indicated that someone may have still been inside the residence at the time of the incident.

Firefighters encountered intense fire conditions while working to bring the blaze under control, along with a partial collapse of the structure during the response.

Officials discovered the body of a woman inside the home after they had extinguished the fire.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Residents in the neighborhood say they were shaken by the incident and saddened by the tragic outcome.

A cause of the fire was not immediately known as of Sunday afternoon.

Officials released a statement offering condolences to the victim’s family, noting that more information will be released as it becomes available.
