A Pomona father says rats are taking over his apartment, getting into his food and leaving him worried about the safety of his 1-year-old son.

De-Vonte Smith contacted News 12 after he says repeated attempts to get the problem under control at The Manors on Route 202 have failed.

Smith provided News 12 with disturbing video and photos showing rats inside his apartment and others caught in traps.

“We noticed our food being messed with and packages being opened,” Smith said.

Smith says he first noticed rat droppings about two months ago, but within the past few days, he began seeing the rodents. When News 12 asked how often, Smith said, “One rat a day for the last 10 days.”

His biggest concern is his young son.

“Absolutely disgusting. I have a one-year-old. He crawls around everywhere. He has toys he plays — he puts stuff in his mouth,” Smith said.

Smith is not the only tenant reporting a problem. His neighbor, Elizabeth Manon, told News 12 she also found a rat and droppings inside her apartment. Manon has three children, including a 3-month-old baby.

“It was very concerning for me. I couldn’t sleep all night,” Manon said. “I had to watch the bassinet all night because I don’t have nowhere else to go.”

Experts say rats can pose a health risk by spreading diseases through their urine, droppings and saliva and by contaminating food and surfaces. Young children can be particularly vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing and they are more likely to touch contaminated surfaces and put their hands or objects in their mouths. Rodent allergens can also trigger asthma and allergic reactions.

Rockland County confirms an inspector responded to Smith’s apartment last week and observed a dead rat in a kitchen snap trap. The county issued three violations related to the rodent problem and other conditions inside the apartment. According to the inspection report, the apartment is required to be assessed and treated by a licensed exterminator and entry points must be sealed.

The county inspection report lists Manors Gardens NY LP as the parcel contact for the property.

News 12 tried calling management and went to the management office Friday looking for answers, but no one was there. A sign on the door said the office was closed. News 12 also reached out by email for comment.

In the meantime, Smith says he wants management to provide temporary accommodations for his family until the rats are gone.

“They are no help,” Smith said. “They said they don’t accommodate hotels and we have to deal with the problem.”

County officials say extermination efforts are underway and surrounding units will be investigated. The county is also requiring every apartment in the building to be inspected by an exterminator.
