Families are searching for new housing after a fire tore through a multifamily home on Lafayette Street in White Plains.
Flames were seen bursting through windows at 3 Lafayette Street Saturday night, as firefighters battled both the blaze and freezing temperatures. The White Plains Fire Department described launching an aggressive interior attack while crews worked through icy conditions to establish water pressure.
By Sunday morning, the extent of the damage was clear. The hallway, kitchen and living areas of the home were heavily charred, with much of the interior destroyed.
Despite the severity of the fire, all tenants were able to escape safely.
The focus has shifted to recovery. Some displaced residents are staying with neighbors, while others are receiving emergency assistance from the Red Cross.
Crews spent the day removing debris and boarding up broken windows.
Officials say the cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
