Residents near the area of Roberts Road and Suffern Place in Monsey are still looking for answers after reports of a strong gasoline odor coming from area sewers last week.
On Monday morning, a drain near the intersection was cleaned as part of ongoing efforts to address the issue.
Officials said the work was being performed by a DEC contractor conducting follow-up work related to the investigation.
The cleanup took place near the area where residents reported a strong gasoline smell coming from sewers last week.
Yisroel Bass, who lives in the neighborhood, said he was concerned about the potential impact on local families.
"I was worried about my kids playing outside and all that stuff, so I'm glad somebody is doing something about it, but I'm afraid there's still some other issue besides the gas that they still haven't figured out," Bass said.
Bass said he has raised concerns with the Town of Ramapo about an odor that he says has come and gone since 2024.
"It used to smell like, almost like asphalt, like when they're pouring fresh asphalt. It was just terrible. It would take over the whole neighborhood," Bass said.
Other neighbors on Suffern Place also told News 12 that a bad smell has lingered in the area for quite some time.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation said it investigated the situation Thursday night, placed absorbent material in manholes and then vacuumed the manholes on Friday to address the immediate issue.
According to the DEC, the source of the odor remains unknown.
A nearby gas station was inspected, but no obvious problems were found.
The DEC said it will continue to follow up on the investigation.
