As another winter storm approaches Westchester County, local leaders and residents are preparing for increasingly dangerous conditions caused by repeated snowfall and freezing temperatures.

Officials warn that multiple storms create what’s known as a layered snowpack — when snow melts slightly and refreezes, forming dense, hardened ice beneath newer snow. This can lead to slippery sidewalks, hazardous roads and difficult working conditions for crews.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner urged residents to take precautions, saying major storms can disrupt daily life for days. “We really have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” he said.

Residents Bela and Siggi Toth of Hartsdale said the repeated storms are physically taxing, especially for older adults.

In Hastings-on-Hudson, Mayor Thomas Drake said the buildup of snow and ice is putting extra strain on public works crews and equipment.

The compacted layers create unpredictable and hazardous conditions that can worsen with each passing storm, increasing risks for drivers, pedestrians and snow removal crews alike.
