A Mahopac man is accused of pointing a loaded gun at a school bus while children were inside.
It happened Wednesday morning on the Taconic State Parkway near Exit 3 in Mount Pleasant.
Officials say a school bus driver was heading to Scarsdale.
On board was a bus monitor and three students, two of whom are only 3-years-old.
After the school bus driver made a lane change from the left to the center lane, a car pulled up alongside it, according to authorities. The driver of that car has been identified as Michael Alarcon, 19, of Mahopac.
That's when police say Alarcon allegedly took out a handgun and pointed it at the bus driver. He also allegedly pointed a laser at the bus driver, according to the Westchester County District Attorney's Office.
The bus driver quickly got off at the nearest exit as Alarcon reportedly drove away. He was later found by police. Officers say he had a loaded handgun with a large-capacity magazine.
“Any parent who puts their child on a school bus in the morning should not have to hold their breath until they return home. What happened on the Taconic Wednesday morning, as alleged, could have easily become every parent’s worst nightmare. Loaded guns and uncontrolled road rage have absolutely no place on our public highways, let alone near school buses carrying our most precious resource," says Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace.
Families in Westchester County say the allegations in this case are shocking and scary.
"It's absolutely horrendous to hear or even fathom," says Karin, who lives in Mount Pleasant.
In a press release, Cacace said that, due in large part to the composure of the bus driver, the young students were not physically hurt in the ordeal.
Alarcon is facing several misdemeanor and felony charges.
He pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charges and did not enter a plea as to the felony charges, according to the district attorney's office.
Alarcon is due back in court on Feb. 19.
