An early morning police chase prompted a lockout at a New Rochelle elementary school.
According to Suffolk County police, Eric Giovanni Whilby was arrested with the assistance of state police and New Rochelle police on Pelham Road in New Rochelle at 8:40 a.m. in connection with the shooting of a woman on Long Island early Thursday morning.
Officials say the 40-year-old woman was shot and seriously injured at 12:52 a.m. in Greenlawn, Long Island, during a domestic-related incident. The shooter then fled the scene.
Video shared with News 12 shows the man running across a field near Trinity Elementary School as police officers pursue the individual.
According to school officials, the incident began when New York State Police troopers were involved in a high-speed chase on Interstate 95. The chase ended near the school, where the suspect fled on foot through a wooded area near school grounds.
"There were a few people on the street and we were all yelling to the cops where he had turned off. We were like, he turned up there," said a woman who lives near where the chase ended.
At the time, Trinity kindergarten students and their families were outside participating in a field day event. School officials quickly brought everyone inside and placed the building into a lockdown, meaning no one could enter or exit.
"Passing the school every single day with the ice cream truck, in addition to families, you would think this would be the last place," said a nearby New Rochelle resident.
In a statement, the district said no students, staff, or families were involved or harmed and all are safe. The field day resumed after the situation was resolved.
