A Poughkeepsie Common Council member already facing felony charges in a separate case is now accused of repeatedly striking a 69-year-old person in the head.

Christopher Grant, 38, who represents the city’s 6th Ward, was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of attempted second-degree assault, a felony, according to the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors say the charge stems from an Aug. 2, 2025 incident in the City of Poughkeepsie. An indictment alleges Grant, who was 37 at the time, repeatedly struck the victim in and around the head in an attempt to cause physical injury.

Grant was released on his own recognizance following his arraignment in Dutchess County Court.

The councilmember was also arrested last month in a separate case involving an alleged domestic incident.

In that case, Grant was charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree strangulation and first-degree unlawful imprisonment, all felonies, as well as misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child and third-degree assault.

Prosecutors say those charges stem from an Aug. 1 incident in the Town of Poughkeepsie following the Hudson Valley Caribbean Festival at Waryas Park.

Following that arrest, Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers called the allegations “deeply concerning” and said domestic violence “should never be tolerated.”
