A fight between two students at Suffern High School ended with a staff member taken to the hospital and a 16-year-old in custody.

It happened Friday around 11 a.m. inside the school, according to police.

Ramapo police released the following information on the department's Facebook page:

"The Ramapo Police Department responded earlier today to a report of a fight in progress at Suffern High School. Two students had been engaged in a physical altercation. When school staff intervened in an effort to stop the fight, one student assaulted a staff member. Faculty, school administrators, and the Town of Ramapo Police Department School Resource Officer immediately intervened. The SRO took a 16-year-old student into custody without further incident.

The suspect was transported to Ramapo Police Headquarters and is currently being processed on felony-level charges. The staff member who was assaulted was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. This remains an active investigation and additional charges and/or arrests may follow.”

The two students involved are both 16. No weapons were involved, according to officers.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. P. Erik Gunderson sent News 12 a statement:

"During the lunch period today, there was a serious altercation involving two students that resulted in one of our administrators being injured. The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. We understand that this situation is concerning, and we are continuing to review the incident with law enforcement and our team."

Parents who spoke with News 12 say they were shocked to hear what happened.

"It's very upsetting and it's very sad," said one parent, as he was picking up his children from the school Friday.
