The American Red Cross is sounding the alarm on fire safety in Yonkers.

Volunteers spread out across the city as part of the “Sound the Alarm” campaign, installing free smoke detectors in homes and educating residents about fire prevention. Officials say working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half.

“It’s nice to be somewhere before disaster strikes,” said Frederic Klein with the Red Cross.

Crews visited multiple homes, including an apartment on Warburton Avenue, where a mother of a young child signed up for the program after realizing she didn’t have an alarm installed.

Volunteers not only install the devices, but also check for potential fire hazards and offer safety tips.

“When I moved here I didn’t have an alarm,” said Yonkers resident Nataly Moreno. “I was like, okay, let me sign up for this.”

The initiative is free and aims to make homes safer before emergencies happen.
