There was a large gathering Thursday for the annual Shine the Light Solidarity Bridge Walk at the Mario Cuomo Bridge to raise awareness for domestic violence.
"It gives us the opportunity to remember and to honor the memory and survivors. It's a day of unification and solidarity," said Elizabeth Santiago, who is with the Center for Safety & Change.
Organizers told News 12 that it's also an opportunity to raise awareness about domestic violence, as everyone met on the bridge coming from both Rockland and Westchester Counties. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
"The numbers have been going up, unfortunately. I think people are coming to the realization that domestic violence is more than just a physical thing. It's things that we see online: abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse. Once people are educated on what abuse looks like, it's easier for them to seek the help that they might need," said Shaire Gadson from Hope's Door.
Members of Gabby Petito's family took part in the walk.
"There's so many Gabbys out there. She's not the only one. It happens every day where someone that's supposed to love them takes their partner, and it needs to stop," said Tara Petito, Gabby's bonus mom.
"Gabby was beautiful inside and out. She had a light about her that you don't see often. But to see so many people come together, it's amazing. We know that there is hope out there," said Gabby's grandma, Mary Wickman.
